Cambodia has been promoting the potential of Cambodian pepper and increasing the export volume to the Japanese market.
The Ministry of Commerce, the Cambodia Pepper and Spices Federation, the Japan Pepper Association and the ASEAN-Japan Centre held an online workshop last Friday on “Promotion of Cambodian pepper to Japan.”
The workshop took place in the presence of H.E. Kao Kosal, Director-General, Directorate of Trade Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, Dr. Kunihiko HIRABAYASHI, Secretary-General, ASEAN-Japan Centre, Mr. Mak Ny, President of the Cambodia Pepper and Spices Federation, and Mr. Jyunichi HAYASHI, the Chairman, Japan Pepper Association, as well as many Japanese businessmen and entrepreneurs.
The workshop was designated to show the potential and quality of Cambodian pepper, the pepper market demand in Japan and production capacity for export, especially for export to Japan, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
Mr. Mak Ny said that through the workshop, the Japanese people will learn more about Cambodian pepper, which will lead to more exports to Japan.
“We are working on the promotion so that more Japanese people will know clearly about the Cambodian pepper, which will then lead to the increasing demand of the commodity,” he added.
In 2021, Cambodia exported 10 tonnes of pepper to Japan worth more than US$170,000.
Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with the ASEAN-Japan Centre, has published books on the study of Cambodian pepper, in Japanese and English.
The ministry said the books would further guide the pepper business and pepper exports to the Japanese market.
Cambodia exported 28,074 tonnes of pepper in 2021, a remarkable increase of 452 percent compared to a year before, data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries showed.
Vietnam was the biggest market of the Kingdom’s pepper last year. The rest went to ASEAN countries, the EU, China’s Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, and some countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
