16th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Kicks Off

The 16th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) officially kicked off this morning under the presidency of Samdech Pichey Sena Tea Banh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the National Defence of Cambodia, with the participation of his counterparts from other ASEAN countries, including Myanmar.

This meeting was also attended by H.E. Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary-General of ASEAN.

H.E. General Nem Sowath, Director General of the General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of National Defence said this meeting will adopt six important documents, including those on enhanced military cooperation to prevent cross-border pandemics in the bloc and promote support mechanisms for ASEAN female peacekeepers.

The ASEAN defence ministers are also expected to endorse the Phnom Penh Vision on the role of defence institutions in supporting the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery, terms of operation of the Centre for Information Security in the framework of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting and the Joint Statement on Defence Cooperation to strengthen solidarity for security, he added.

Besides the 16th ADMM, all ASEAN Defence Ministers will hold a physical informal meeting with their Japanese counterpart and a virtual informal meeting with their Chinese counterpart.
