1st Korea-Cambodia Agricultural Product and Food Industry Promotion Workshop to Seek Ways to Promote Mutual Growth of Korean and Cambodian Agricultural Industries

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA, Minister Lee Dong-phil) will hold the 1st Korea-Cambodia Agricultural Product and Food Industry Promotion Workshop with the participation of about 70 people from August 11 to 12. Participants include those from agriculture and food-related government units and companies engaging in overseas agricultural development in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

? This workshop aims to identify cooperative measures to plan a strategy for the development of the agricultural product and food industries in Korea and Cambodia and accelerate the advancement of Korean agricultural technology into Cambodia. This workshop will be held for the first time in Cambodia, a market into which 29 Korean farming companies made a foray. Moreover, the Korean government is giving various ODA* to Cambodia.

* An RPC in Banteay Meanchey, general rural development (roads, reservoirs and wells) in Kampot Province and Kampong Speu Province in 2010 and five poultry farming villages (139 faming families) in Kampot Province since 2015

? The workshop will explain the status of Cambodia’s farming policies, strategy for the development of both countries’ agricultural industries and Cambodia’s directions for foreign investment inducement and cases of Korean companies’ investment in Cambodia. A general discussion will also be held.

? The workshop will proceed with an opening speech by Bae Sang-du, director of the General Division of International Cooperation, MAFRA, congratulatory messages by Kim Won-jin, Korean ambassador to Cambodia and Sok Chenda Sophea, general secretary of the CDC and special presentations by Lim Visal, a manager at the Investment Promotion Department at the CDC, and Jang Gyeong-guk, chairman of the Good Farmers. Lim’s special presentation will deal with the status of Cambodia’s agricultural policies and investment in Cambodia while Jang will talk about Korean companies’ strategy in Cambodia for the mutual growth of the Korean and Cambodian agricultural industries.

? After, the main presentations will be given on the status of the development of MH Bio farms (Jeon Si-hang, head of a Korean corporation in Cambodia), investment strategyfor the Cambodian agricultural industry and commercialization (Ng Kah How, a director of the Mong Reththy Group), cases of Korean companies’ advancement into Cambodia (Kim Jeong-in, chairman of the Korean Agricultural Industry Association in Cambodia), strategy for processing and commercializing promising agricultural items (Professor Thong Kong of Royal Cambodian University) and investment strategy for mutual growth in Cambodia (Choi Ho-jin, a director of Korea Rural Community Corporation).

? On top of that, participants will share obstacles facing Korean companies in Cambodia as well as their experiences and information and discuss ways to make improvements to systems for the promotion of investment in the Cambodian agricultural industry.

* Debate participants: Lee Bong-hun, chairman of the KCID, Park Bong-su, a junior official of the MAFRA, Lim Nan, head of the Agricultural and Forestry Bureau in Kampong Speu Province, Okmakara, director of the CARDI, Bang Jin-gi, director of the KOPIA in Cambodia and Lee Eun-su, secretary general of the Overseas Agri-Development Service

? On the second day of the workshop, participants will visit business sites (Hyundai Corp.’s mango farm and MH Bio Energy’s sugarcane farm) in Kampong Speu Province and hold a meeting there.

? This workshop to be held in Cambodia for the first time is expected to encourage cooperation between the two nations for the promotion of Korea’s advancement into Cambodia and industrial growth and serve as an opportunity to develop amutual growth model between Korea and Cambodia, a MAFRA official said.
