Cambodia Aims to Vaccinate 91% of Total Population against COVID-19

Cambodia aims to build a strong herd immunity by fully vaccinating up to 91 percent of the total population of 16 million.

Speaking at a press conference following the launching ceremony of vaccination campaign to children aged from 6 to under 12 years old here this morning, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, said that Cambodia will be among the most vaccinated countries against COVID-19 in the world.

“This is not considered as a race in COVID-19 vaccination, but it is the obligation of the Royal Government of Cambodia in protecting the lives of its citizens and accelerating the resumption of economic and social activities,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen said.

The Kingdom has been conducting three COVID-19 vaccination campaigns: for the 18 years old and up, the 12 to under 18 years old, and the 3rd dose or booster dose.

Cambodia has so far vaccinated about 72.04 percent of the total population of 16 million.

PM: No Sign for Possible Negotiation with the Opposition

The surprise presence of Samdech Techo Prime Minister in a recent virtual internal meeting of the senior members of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) does not imply any green light for negotiation intention at all.

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen made such a clear stand to freeze emerging groundless otherwise interpretation by some analysts and opposition politicians.

“My presence in the Zoom meeting does not mean to give any negotiation signal, but to send out my message that my men are everywhere,” said Samdech Techo Prime Minister.

He added that there is no political issues for negotiation, and what is needed to be done is to bring those convicted politicians in exile to serve their sentence.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister also warned any opposition activities that threaten the national interest.

Cambodia is politically moving forward with a planned local commune-Sangkat council election in 2022 and the national election in 2023 wherein many new and old political parties will participate.

Booster Dose Campaign for General Public to Begin in October

The campaign for providing booster doses for the general public will kick off next month, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen at a press conference held here this morning at the Peace Palace following the launching ceremony of vaccination campaign for children aged from 6 to under 12 years old.

The campaign will begin with Phnom Penh capital and the province of Kandal, then other provinces, the Premier added.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined that the 3rd dose or booster dose will be given to everyone, but on a voluntary basis.

The Kingdom has been conducting three COVID-19 vaccination campaigns: for the 18 years old and up, the 12 to under 18 years old, and the 3rd dose or booster dose.

The booster doses have been administered to 806,717 people who are frontline health personnel and officials, senior officials, local officials and the over-60s.

If we add all the figures, Cambodia has so far vaccinated about 72.04 percent of the total population of 16 million.

Cambodian PM Says Opposition’s Zoom Meeting Not Private

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, said the recent virtual internal meeting of the senior members of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was not private and his presence was not through hacking.

Addressing to a press conference following the launching ceremony of vaccination campaign for children aged from 6 to under 12 years old here this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined that he had the right to attend the meeting because this was not private.

“I had full right to attend this meeting, it was not a private one. This is the national security issue that I can attend,” he said. “This is not wrong, I have the password and code to attend this Zoom meeting.”

Samdech Techo Hun Sen reiterated that his presence at the virtual meeting “does not mean to give any negotiation signal”, but to send out his message that his men are everywhere.

The Premier stressed that the current priority of the Royal Government is to focus on the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the post-pandemic economic recovery, and the commune/Sangkat council election.

COVID-19: Tally Rises to 102,834 with 698 New Cases

Cambodia’s national counts of COVID-19 stood at 102,834 this morning after the detection of 698 new cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

The same source pointed out that of the new infections, 151 were imported and the rest were linked to the Feb. 20 community outbreak.

Besides, the ministry reported 11 new deaths, but 465 new recoveries; the total death and recovered cases in the Kingdom thus rose to 2,089 and 96,275, respectively.

The first COVID-19 case was reported in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province. The confirmed cases have surged quickly this year due to the Feb. 20 incident.
