Cambodia Discusses Environment Cooperation with Australia

AKP Phnom Penh, September 18, 2021 — Cambodia and Australia have held a meeting to discuss about continued bilateral cooperation on environment, especially in sustainable energy and water resource management.

The meeting took place here in Phnom Penh recently between H.E. Say Samal, Minister of Environment and H.E. Pablo Kang, Ambassador of Australia to Cambodia.

H.E. Say Samal underlined the ministry’s endeavour toward environmental protection, natural resource management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihood.

He continued that the Royal Government of Cambodia has prepared a long-time strategy on social and economic infrastructures factoring in sustainable power sources in the future.

The world is stepping toward renewable and clean energy, and Cambodia is also studying and preparing a long-time strategic plan with carbon neutral.

From his end, H.E. Pablo Kang highlighted the collaboration between Australia and Mekong River countries including Cambodia, especially on lower Carbone rice and fish breeding, irrigation system, flood disaster management, and reduction of plastic pollution in the sea.

Cambodian Girl Volleyball Team Supported for 2023 SEA Games

AKP Phnom Penh, September 18, 2021 — A Cambodian-American athlete Ms. Brittany Melirachana Soun has volunteered to help Cambodian girl volleyball team to prepare for the competition during SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia.

The good news was shared by the Volleyball Federation of Cambodia.

Ms. Brittany Melirachana Soun,16 years old and 1.80 metres high, was born in the United States of America and her parents are Cambodians.

She played for Varisity Campolindo High School, Kleos Beach Volleyball Club and Elite Development Programme 1 from 2019 to 2021.

She won medals for 2021 Haft Moon Bay AVP U16 Beach Volleyball Tournament Finalist, 2019 California Interscholastic Federation Northern Regional Champion, Division 1, 2019 California State Champion Finalist, Division 1, and 2019 Campolindo High School JV Coaches Award.

Digital Education Necessary for Emerging Global Industry 4.0

AKP Phnom Penh, September 18, 2021 — Quality and equitable education and training on ICT skill, digital technology and science are necessary for Cambodian youth to engage in the emerging global industry 4.0 age.

H.E. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports highlighted the insights in a recent dissemination workshop of an inter-ministerial launch of the Basic Education Equivalency Programme (BEEP) through a videoconference.

The minister continued that BEEP will provide good opportunities for youth, garment workers, and out-of-school students to continue skill learning at technique and vocational training education institutions as well as high schools.

This programme reflects the Royal Government of Cambodia’s effort in developing human resources, the youth to respond to emerging job markets in the country and beyond.

H.E. Pich Sophoan, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and Permanent Secretary of State at the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and Mr. Sadar Umar Alam, Representative of UNESCO to Cambodia who also joined the virtual event underlined the significance of BEEP and called for collective effort to support and implement the guidelines of the programme.

BEEP is a joint initiative among the two ministries and UNESCO to expand access to basic education through flexible, self-paced and blended learning which is part of the United Nations (UN) joint programme on Decent Employment for Youth (DEY Phase II) in Cambodia.

DEY Phase-II aims to support young women and men in Cambodia to obtain decent and productive employment opportunities by ensuring that they are better able to meet labour market demand and are prepared for quality employment.

Cambodia Releases Outcomes of the 3rd ASEM Senior Officials’ Meeting

AKP Phnom Penh, September 18, 2021 — Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has issued a press release on the outcomes of the 3rd ASEM Senior Officials’ Meeting held on Sept. 16-17 via videoconference.
The full press release AKP received this morning reads as follows:
“Cambodia, as the host of the 13th ASEM Summit (ASEM13), co-chaired with Slovenia, as the President of the European Council, the 3rd ASEM Senior Officials’ Meeting (ASEM SOM) on 16-17September 2021 via a videoconference. The Meeting was participated by 51ASEM SOM Leaders as well as high representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, the European Union, and the Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).
Cambodia informed the Meeting that the official invitation for the ASEM13 had been extended to all ASEM Leaders. Up to date, many ASEM Leaders, including the President of European Council and the ASEAN Secretary-General, have confirmed their participation in the ASEM13, which will be virtually held on 25-26 November 2021.
During this two-day Meeting, ASEM SOM Leaders actively discussed the draft ASEM13 Chair’s Statement to be adopted at the ASEM13. ASEM SOM Leaders agreed to have another round of drafting session later this month to discuss some remaining issues.
All SOM Leaders sincerely appreciated Cambodia and Slovenia for co-hosting the SOM Meeting and for maintaining ASEM momentum towards a successful ASEM13.”

COVID-19: 648 New Cases, but 492 Recovered Patients

The Ministry of Health registered 648 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) this morning; bringing the tally to 103,482.
According to the ministry’s press release, among the new infections, 160 were imported and the rest were linked to the Feb. 20 community outbreak.
At the same time, 7 more people have lost their lives due to COVID-19, but 492 more patients have successfully been cured; the total death and recovered cases in Cambodia thus increased to 2,096 and 96,767, respectively.
The first COVID-19 case was reported in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province. The confirmed cases have surged quickly this year due to the Feb. 20 incident.
