COVID-19: New Cases Decline to 166; Tally 117,201

Cambodia’s new cases of COVID-19 dropped to 166 this morning; bringing the tally to 117,201, according to a press release of the Ministry of Health.
These are PCR test results, underlined the same source, adding that 31 of the new infections were imported and the rest were connected to the Feb. 20 community outbreak.
Besides, there were 270 new recoveries and 12 more deaths (5 of them have not gotten vaccinated); the total cured and death cases in the Kingdom thus jumped to 111,690 and 2,693, respectively.
The first COVID-19 case was reported in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province. The confirmed cases have surged quickly this year due to the Feb. 20 incident.

Cambodian PM Receives Director General UPF

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, received here this morning at the Peace Palace Dr. Yun Young-ho, Director General of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).
According to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Assistant of the Prime Minister, in the meeting Dr. Yun Young-ho, also a special envoy of Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, Co-founder of UPF, congratulated Cambodia on the successful COVID-19 vaccination process.
Dr. Yun Young-ho said this is a model of leadership not only for Korea, but also for the whole world.
The UPF’s director general expressed his deep gratitude to Samdech Techo for deciding to attend the upcoming summit on peace on the Korean Peninsula and agreed to co-chair this international event. Dr. Yun Young-ho also reported to Samdech Techo on progress of the preparations for the summit.
“Samdech Techo has a peaceful heart in the vision of the people around the world. Samdech Techo is the leader of global peace,” he said, asking for recommendations from the Cambodian Premier for the success of the forthcoming summit.
In reply, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked Dr. Yun Young-ho for conveying to him the greetings from Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, and shared a number of perspectives and initiatives for the summit as well as for the cooperation of UPF in the Indo-Pacific and Mekong frameworks.

Cambodian Commerce Minister Attends Virtual Ministerial Meeting of LDCs

H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce of Cambodia, yesterday attended the virtual Ministerial Meeting of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to examine and approve the Statement of LDCs for the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference to be held from Nov. 30 to Dec. 03, 2021 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The minister informed the meeting about the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC)’s principles to support multilateral trading system under the framework of WTO as Cambodia has gained many benefits through special treatment and this multilateral trading system in particular.
The Statement of LDC Ministers has set forth the principles and position of LDCs to all WTO members to consider and make decision on negotiations on prioritised topics of LDCs to enhance LDCs’ export to global markets.
H.E. Pan Sorasak hoped that the LDCs’ principles and position would be taken into thorough consideration by other members to get balance results and common interests for the LDCs and other members as well as the WTO.
Topics of Statement of the LDC ministers includes rules of origin, service exemption for LDCs, free quota and tariff, decision on LDC graduation, WTO’s membership, response to the global spread of COVID-19, subsidies in the fisheries sector, agricultural negotiations, special and particular treatment, reform of the WTO’s Appellate Body, e-commerce, trade facilitation agreement, and so on.

Siem Reap Tourism Development Master Plan Launched

The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially announced the implementation of the Siem Reap Tourism Development Master Plan 2021-2035.
The official launching ceremony was held virtually on Oct. 20 under the presidency of H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance and Chairman of the National Committee for Tourism Development.
The government is optimistic that Siem Reap tourism will return to normal after main destinations: Kulen National Park, Banteay Srei Protected Area, Angkor Tourist Site, Tonle Sap Lake and the new Siem Reap tourist area have been developed to increase the satisfaction and attractiveness of tourists.
On the occasion, H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth urged the relevant ministries and institutions as well as the private sector to jointly strengthen the qualifications of Siem Reap to attract domestic and international tourists, such as the completion of the project of 38 roads construction which include roads for cars, roads for motorbikes, roads for bicycles, roads for pedestrians, and accelerate the development of the port of Chong Khneas to increase the attractiveness of Siem Reap so that to contribute to the recovery of tourism after the COVID-19 crisis.
The Royal Government estimates that by 2035, the number of international tourists to Cambodia will increase to 7.5 million and national tourists to 10.9 million, generating about US$5.9 billion in revenue and some 940,000 direct jobs.

Cambodia Encourages U.S. Companies to Invest in Infrastructure Projects

Cambodian government has encouraged U.S. companies to join biding on infrastructure projects and build quality physical infrastructure in Cambodia.
The encouragement was made by H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport in a virtual meeting on Oct. 20 with Mr. Ted Osius, President and CEO of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (U.S.-ABC), accompanied by representatives from a number of the Council’s member companies.
H.E. Senior Minister emphasised the importance of private sector’s participation in the development of infrastructure as well as the national economy, adding that private sector is the key engine of Cambodia’s economic growth.
There has not been any American companies participated in bidding for infrastructure construction projects, in Cambodia, he said, thus encouraging American companies to participate as well as invest in the development of Cambodia’s infrastructure.
The U.S. helped construct the 230-kilometre-long National Road 4, linking Phnom Penh capital to Sihanoukville of Preah Sihanouk province in the 1950s.
