Government Remains Vigilant against COVID-19

The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) will continue to pay high attention to the fight against COVID-19 despite its success in the containment and prevention of the pandemic so far, affirmed Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

A priority in this fight is to continue administering vaccines to the citizens, the Premier said in a Facebook post yesterday, stressing that the RGC will keep finding more vaccines for its people.

There are currently almost 9 million doses left in stock. Besides, the country is expected some more 20 million doses of vaccines.

As of July 3, 94.31 percent of the total population of 16 million have been vaccinated with the basic doses. Around 9.5 million have got the 3rd shot, while nearly 3 million the 4th jab and some 320,000 the 5th dose.

UNDP Welcomes Royal Government’s Mobilisation of Funds for Mine Action

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has congratulated the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) on mobilising vital funds from the private sector and the Cambodian Red Cross to support landmine clearance, as announced on July 1, 2022.

According to a recent UNDP Cambodia’s statement, Mine Action is more than just clearing contaminated land. It is about people and societies and their prospects for a dignified and prosperous life.

“Today, throughout Cambodia, almost 1 million people are still at risk, living and working in contaminated areas where mines and explosive remnants of war continue to kill, injure, and traumatise communities; severely impeding the country’s recovery and development and constraining livelihoods in rural communities,” the statement said.

Under the leadership of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), tasked by the RGC to manage the funds, this support will accelerate the humanitarian – development – peace nexus by removing landmines that compromise socio-economic and psychosocial wellbeing and return safe land to communities for productive use, creating pathways for recovery efforts which enable social, economic, and environmental benefits, it added.

“UNDP stands ready to continue supporting the RGC and CMAA Authority and looks forward to seeing the results of this great accomplishment, with hopes that such good practices can be shared during the celebration of 30 years of Mine Action in Cambodia, alongside upcoming regional and global events planned for this year on Mine Action,” underlined the statement.

UNDP also urged the continued participation of development partners and the private sector, as a key actor in national development, in the pursuit of a Mine-Free 2025, the 2030 Agenda and the imperative to LeaveNoOneBehind.

Samdech Techo Project for Mine Action to Accelerate Realisation of Mine-free Status

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on July 3 announced to create Samdech Techo Project for Mine Action (STP-MA) to boost the mine clearance work to achieve the country’s goal of becoming a mine-free nation by 2025.

Themed “Providing Safe Ground, Creating Smiles”, the project will be led, managed and coordinated by the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) chaired by Samdech Techo Prime Minister”, according to CMAA.

The initiative was born from the appeal of Samdech Techo Hun Sen while presiding over the celebration of 18th National Fisheries Day at Trapaing Thmar reservoir located in Trapaing Thmar village, Poy Char commune, Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey province on July 1.

On the occasion, the Premier called on the private sector to take part in mine and UXO clearance operations in order to contribute to achieving the Cambodia’s goal as set.

According to Samdech Techo Hun Sen, some particular areas need only a small fund – between US$50,000 and US$100,000 – to finish the mine clearance work for the public safety.

Following his appeal, many tycoons, the Cambodian Red Cross and charitable people have announced their financial contributions to the project.
