Cambodian King Flew To Beijing For Regular Medical Checkup

Cambodian King, Norodom Sihamoni, along with his mother, former Queen, Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, left here today for Beijing for a routine medical checkup and treatment.

At the Phnom Penh International Airport, the royal family was seen off by Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Wang Wentian, as well as, other dignitaries.

In a royal message to the compatriots, Sihamoni, 69, said, his trip to Beijing was to have a medical checkup and treatment.

“During my absence, Samdech Say Chhum, President of the Senate, will assume the title of the acting Head of State of the Kingdom of Cambodia,” he said.

The king has his health checked up by Chinese doctors twice a year. His last medical checkup trip was made in Mar, this year.

Cambodia Attracted Over 740,000 Int’l Tourists In First Seven Months Of This Year

Cambodia attracted more than 740,000 international visitors, in the first seven months of this year, an increase of 560 percent, compared to the same period last year, the Ministry of Tourism said, in a news release, yesterday.

Tourism Minister, Thong Khon, said, the re-opening of all socioeconomic activities has boosted growth at some major tourist destinations, in the capital city, Phnom Penh, the cultural province of Siem Reap, and the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk.

During the Jan-Jul period this year, neighbouring Vietnam topped the chart of international tourist arrivals to the kingdom, followed by Thailand and China.

Cambodia is hoping to attract at least one million international tourists in 2022, much higher than only 200,000 in 2021, Khon said, adding that, the number will hit two million in 2023, and reach the pre-COVID-19 level in 2026 or 2027.

In the pre-pandemic era, the kingdom welcomed 6.6 million international tourists in 2019, generating 4.92 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, according to the ministry.

Tourism is one of four pillars supporting the economy in the country.

The kingdom is famous for its three world heritage sites, namely the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province, the Preah Vihear Temple in Preah Vihear province, and the Sambor Prei Kuk Archaeological Site in Kampong Thom province.

Besides, it has a 450-km pristine coastline, stretching across four south-western provinces

Their Majesties the King and Queen-Mother on the Way to China for Routine Medical Visit

His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia and Her Majesty Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk left here this morning for their routine medical checkup in China.

The monarchs were seen off at Phnom Penh International Airport by Cambodian top leaders, including Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum, President of the Senate; Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly, and Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and his spouse Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen, as well as many other senior government officials and royal family members.

Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Wang Wentian was also present on the occasion.

During His Majesty the King’s absence, Samdech Say Chhum will act as the Acting Head of State.

Their Majesties the King and Queen-Mother regularly undergo their medical checkup in Beijing. During their stay in China, they always receive warm hospitality from Chinese leaders and medical doctors.

Their last medical visit to China was from Mar. 4 to April 12, 2022.
