Cambodia to Recognise City with Best 2022-2023 Countdown Event

The Ministry of Tourism and the National Committee for Clean City Assessment will recognise the city that hosts the most impressive 2022-2023 countdown event.

The competition is effective from 5:00 PM of Dec. 31, 2022 to 5:00 PM of Jan. 2, 2023, according to a press release issued by the National Committee for Clean City Assessment on Dec. 29.

The competition criteria include the decoration, hygiene and environmental friendliness, security, safety, order, and satisfaction and pleasure of tourists and the public engaging.

The public and national and international tourists can join online voting for the city with countdown event they consider most impressive at http://bestcountdowncity.cambodiacleancity.gov.kh/.

Two More Roads to be Upgraded with China’s Financial Assistance

Two more key roads connecting Phnom Penh to the southwestern economic pole will be reconstructed and upgraded under China’s assistance.
The two roads include the over-53-kilometre-long National Road (NR) No. 31 from Bek Kus (intersection of NR3) to Kampong Trach district town (junction of NR33) and the over-52-kilometre-long NR33 from Kampot provincial city (intersection of NR3) to Lork (Cambodia-Vietnam border).
The groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation and improvement of the two roads was held in Tek Chhou district, Kampot province this morning under the presidency of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Wang Wentian.
According to Senior Minister H.E. Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, conducted by China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) and technically inspected by Guangzhou Wanan Technical Consulting Co., the reconstruction and upgrading of both roads are scheduled to take 40 months until 2026, at a total estimated cost of more than US$120 million, using a concessional loan from China and a budget of the Royal Government.
H.E. Senior Minister highlights the potential and significance of NR31 and NR33, saying that once the reconstruction completed, the two roads will contribute to the connection between Phnom Penh capital and the provinces of Takeo, Kampot, Kep and Preah Sihanouk.
The two NRs will also greatly benefit the national economy and household economy through better movement of people and all kinds of transport, boosting trade, investment and tourism, he added.

PM Expresses Condolences over Hotel-Casino Blaze in Poipet

Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has extended his deepest condolences over the fire incident at the Grand Diamond City hotel and casino in Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey northwestern province.
While presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction and upgrading of NR31 and 33 in Tek Chhou district, Kampot province this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said according to the provincial report, the death toll would rise to 16, but only 12 bodies have been so far found, with 73 injured, both Cambodians and foreigners.
There are reportedly more than 1,000 people in the hotel-casino during the blaze, including some 500 staff, he added.
The fire, which broke around 11:30 pm on Dec. 28, was now under control and this morning, the search for more bodies continues, he said.
“This is a worse tragedy happened at the end of this year,” said the Premier, expressing thanks to competent authorities, especially the Thai side, for their active participation in the rescue operation.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen also asked concerned authorities to work on the normalisation of Poipet international border gate, the main gateway for tourist and goods flows.

Cambodia-China Bilateral Trade Reaches US$14.5 Billion This Year

The two-way trade between Cambodia and China rose to some US$14.5 billion this year, an increase by 19 percent compared to the previous year.
The figures were shared by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, while he and Chinese Ambassador H.E. Wang Wentian were presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction and upgrading of NR31 and 33 in Tek Chhou district, Kampot province this morning.
The Cambodian Premier expressed his optimism that the bilateral trade exchange between the two countries will see more growth thanks to the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement, which entered into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.
Under the CCFTA, Cambodia can export more than 10,000 items to China, which in turn could export over 8,000 items to Cambodia.
Cambodia mostly exports agricultural products including milled rice, mangoes, banana and cassava to China, and imports industrial products, raw materials, and construction materials from the country.

Cycling Promoted Ahead of SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia

President of the Cambodian Cycling Federation has encouraged the expansion of cycling ahead of the SEA Games 2023 to be hosted by Cambodia.
H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce and President of the Cambodian Cycling Federation, made the call in the closing ceremony of the 2022 National Cycling Championship in Siem Reap province early this week.
He stressed on further training for nursery level and increasing the number of cyclists at clubs and associations in provinces, cities, ministries, and institutions; and the strengthening of the capacity of coaches, athletes, and technical officials.
The minister also urged for the strengthening of the federation’s internal management structure and relation between the clubs and associations across the country, and the engagement of more development partners.
The 2022 National Cycling Championship was a good opportunity for Cambodian athletes to warm up their capacity for the SEA Games 2023, he added.
The event taking place from Dec. 26 to 27 attracted the participation of 285 cyclists, according to Mr. Nou Chamroeun, Secretary General of Cambodian Cycling Federation.
Of the number, 80 competed for Road Bike and 205 others for Mountain Bike.
Road Bike included three disciplines: Man Junior Road Bike, Man Elite Road Bike, and Man Master Road Bike.
Mountain Bike covered four disciplines which were Man Junior Mountain Bike, Man Elite Mountain Bike, Women Mountain Bike and Man Master Mountain Bike.
Twelve Cambodian national athletes, 4 of them are female, joined the tournament to accumulate more experience for the SEA Games 2023.
