Construction of Over US$114 million Bridge in Kratie Province Kicks Off

A 1,761-metre-long and 13.5-metre-wide bridge across the Mekong River in Kratie province officially kicked off this morning and is expected to complete in 2026.
The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and H.E. Wang Wentian, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia.
At an estimated cost of over US$114 million, a concessional loan from the Government of the People’s Republic of China and a budget of the Royal Government of Cambodia, the bridge is located in Talus village, Bos Leav commune, Chetr Borei district.
This is a fruit of the excellent relationship between Cambodia and China, underlined the Premier in his remarks on the occasion, adding that the bridge will be the longest bridge built under China’s financial support.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen on behalf of the Royal Government and people of Cambodia expressed profound thanks to the Government and people of China for their key contribution to the development of Cambodia, especially the construction of physical infrastructure throughout the Kingdom.
According to H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport, the bridge will be constructed by Shanghai Construction Company (SCG) and technically supervised by Guangzhou Wanan Technical Consulting Company for a period of 42 months.
Connecting roads of 31.69 kilometres long and four intermediate bridges with a total length of 384 metres are also part of the project, he added.
This year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Cambodia-China diplomatic ties and the Cambodia-China Friendship Year.

Over 2 Million Tourists Travel during New Year Celebrations

More than 2 million national and international tourists were recorded across the country during the Universal New Year celebrations – on Dec. 31, 2022 and Jan. 1, 2023, said the Ministry of Tourism in a report released this morning.
The figures show an increase by 76.65 percent compared to last year’s celebrations, the source pointed out.
Among the registered visitors, it added, 2,006,117 were national tourists and 16,803 others were foreign visitors.
The most visited destination during the two-day holiday is Phnom Penh capital, followed by the provinces of Preah Sihanouk, Siem Reap, Kampot, Battambang, Kep, Thbong Khmum, and Kampong Cham.

Government Continues to Give Priority to Four Key Sectors

The Royal Government of Cambodia will continue to place priority on four main sectors, including human resources, connectivity, clean water, and electricity, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen this morning.
Addressing to the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 1,761-metre-long bridge in Kratie province, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the Royal Government under the leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) will continue to pay high attention to the above-said sectors.
All of these prioritised sectors are the main foundation for the development of Cambodia, the Premier underlined.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen took the opportunity to express his gratitude to China for its assistance and support for the development of Cambodia, especially for physical infrastructure construction across the Kingdom.

Prime Minister Calls for More Action for Mekong Dolphin Preservation

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has called on all stakeholders, especially the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and local authorities to take more action to preserve the Mekong dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris).
“More attention is needed for the conservation of the Mekong dolphins,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 1,761-metre-long bridge in Kratie province this morning. “The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and local authorities have to ensure that the Mekong dolphins will not be disturbed.”
The Premier made the appeal after three dolphins have been found dead one after another due to entanglement in gillnet in recent weeks.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen also encouraged all stakeholders to establish a permanent core preservation area for the Mekong dolphins, and asked fishermen to stop using banned fishing gear and fishing at prohibited areas.
According to WWF’s report, eleven dolphins died in 2022 (as of Dec. 24, 2022), bringing the total number of dead dolphins to 29 in the last three years.

Cambodia Announces to Welcome Chinese Tourists

Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, has announced to welcome Chinese tourists to Cambodia without restrictions, as China is going to reopen its borders on Jan. 8.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen made the remarks while he and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Wang Wentian were presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a bridge across the Mekong River in Kratie province this morning.
After the reopening, tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of Chinese tourists will travel around the world, including Cambodia, he said.
Before the COVID-19 outbreak, the Premier recalled, Cambodia received more than 2 million Chinese tourists, but due to the pandemic, the number declined remarkably.
For his part, H.E. Ambassador Wang Wentian underlined that China will reopen for its people to travel abroad, and Cambodia will be a most important destination for the Chinese.
