AirAsia Launches First Direct Flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sihanoukville

The Sihanoukville International Airport in Preah Sihanouk, a main coastal province of Cambodia, welcomed this afternoon the AirAsia's first direct flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The new connection demonstrates an increasing awareness of Cambodia's diversified tourism offers and, in particular, a surging demand for the country's beach spots, said Cambodia Airports, the developer and operator of international airports in Cambodia, in a media release.

A water cannon salute greeted the opening route of AirAsia with a full flight of 180 passengers on board after the aircraft had landed at the airport.

We are thrilled that our first flight to Sihanoukville marked a milestone with a successful full flight for our 50th unique route. As a truly ASEAN airline, it remains as our commitment to drive tourism efforts to all countries that we operate in especially within the region. This coastal city in Cambodia presents great potential and dynamic opportunities in terms of tourism, trade and economy which we are happy to be a part of this journey to develop Sihanoukville further. We would like to also take this opportunity to thank Cambodia Airports, Cambodia Tourism and the local authorities for their tremendous support in the launch of this new route, said Mr. Spencer Lee, Head of Commercial for AirAsia Berhad.

More importantly through this direct route, AirAsia wants to open up air travel for the people of Sihanoukville to explore ASEAN and the world using our wide connectivity across 27 countries, he added.

Coming after the launch in June 2016 of the first international scheduled flight between Ho Chi Minh City and Sihanoukville, this new connection to/from Kuala Lumpur via AirAsia reflects the airport's boosting activities.

Mr. Aric Delobel, CEO of Cambodia Airports, said the successful partnership with AirAsia is moving up another step and it is a key driver in connecting Cambodia to the world.

We want to welcome more visitors and airlines in Sihanoukville as we are confident in its potential. Further improving the airport's facilities and passenger experience is key, that is why we will inaugurate early 2018 a new terminal in addition of overhauling the runway capacity for bigger aircraft, he underlined.

According to the media release, this new service operates on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Its arrival time in Sihanoukville is 1 pm while departing time to Kuala Lumpur is scheduled 40 minutes after.
