Almost 8 Million Eligible People Registered on New Voters’ List

The number of registered Cambodian people reached 7,873,194 by the evening of Nov. 30, about 81.47 percent of the total 9.66 million eligible voters, according to the National Election Committee (NEC).

The three-month computerised voter registration process was conducted from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30, 2016.

NEC Official Mr. Em Sophat expressed his satisfaction with the result, saying that this registration was made on a voluntary basis, not an obligation.

He further explained that those who have missed the registration are mostly migrant workers abroad.

Mr. Hang Puthea, NEC Spokesperson, said the voter registration process ran smoothly, a few problems have been recorded during that period, but they have not affected the overall process.

There have been 97 complaints, most of which have been already solved, and some of which have not been solved yet as they involve with different ministries and institutions, Mr. Hang Puthea added.

Ten political parties, 13 national organisations and 3 international organisations took part in the voter registration process as observers.

Cambodia will organise the commune/Sangkat council election on June 4, 2017 and the national election on July 29, 2018.
