Angkor Sangkranta Becomes a Key Tourism Product for Cambodia

Angkor Sangkranta has become an important tourism product for Cambodia along with that of other ASEAN member countries to attract more visitors to the ASEAN region, as well as to Cambodia, said a Cambodian senior tourism official at the Third ASEAN Tourism Committees' Meeting in Siem Reap province yesterday.

Through the Angkor Sangkranta, tourists will learn about Cambodian culture, tradition and custom, said H.E. Tith Chantha, Secretary of State for Tourism, stressing that they will then disseminate Cambodian tourism to the world.

H.E. Hun Many, President of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), the Angkor Sangkranta's organiser, said last year some 1.3 million visitors, of them almost 30,000 are foreigners, enjoyed this annual event, generating about US$80 million.

This year's event is expected to attract nearly 2 million tourists, he underlined.

In ASEAN, there are more than 50 cultural tourism events, of which five are in Cambodia - Water Festival, Angkor Sangkranta, Sea Festival, River Festival, and Half Marathon, according to H.E. Tith Chantha.

Fifth of its kind since its origination in 2013, the Angkor Sangkranta 2017 will fall on April 14-16 - the ordinary days of the Khmer New Year anticipated by all Cambodians.
