APSARA National Authority Excavating Another Ceramic Kiln at Dei Chhnang Gate of Angkor Thom

Archaeologists from the APSARA National Authority have been excavating another ceramic kiln in the northwest of Dei Chhnang Gate of Angkor Thom in Siem Reap province.
The excavation work started in early this month, said the authority in a news release this morning.
Mr. Tin Tina, Deputy Director of the Angkor International Centre of research and documentation, said that in late 2019, his team excavated on an ancient mound called Tuol Trapeang Bos, discovered a ceramic kiln, which is northwest of the Dei Chhnang Gate.
Mr. Tina added that during the excavations, which began in November 2019 and ended in February 2020, the researchers found an ancient kiln structure that began producing the ceramics in the mid-12th century and ended in the mid-13th century.
The excavations at Tuol Trapeang Bos, which researchers named TDCK1, found a different structure from the ceramic kilns in the Angkor site, such as in Tani, Khnar, Po Si, and Anlong Thom, which had the same length, he continued.
However, he said, the ancient kiln at Tuol Trapeang Bos is almost round, with a diameter of two metres and a length of three metres. And this excavation is conducted to compare the research results at the site of the first kiln, to confirm whether the structure of the two sites is the same or not because “we see 24 small and large mounds here, so there is a doubt that those kilns may have different functions.”
