ASEAN Special Envoy’s Visit to Myanmar to Create Conducive Environment for Peaceful Dialogue

The forthcoming visit to Myanmar by H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair, is expected to create a more favourable environment for peaceful dialogue between all parties concerned.
The remarks were made during the meeting here early this week between H.E. Prak Sokhonn, also Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, and Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Nippon Foundation and Japan’s Special Envoy for national reconciliation in Myanmar.
“We noted that the implementation of the ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus has been slower than expected. Nevertheless, we remain hopeful that my upcoming visit to Myanmar will help create a more conducive environment for peaceful dialogue between all parties in hope to return Myanmar back to normalcy,” wrote H.E. Prak Sokhonn on his official Facebook page.
“I believe that Mr. Sasakawa’s vast expertise on Myanmar would be an asset, which can contribute greatly to this common cause,” he added.
The special envoy of the ASEAN Chair will pay the first ever visit to Myanmar from Mar. 20-23, 2022, focusing on the Five-Points Consensus endorsed by the ASEAN Leaders in April last year.
At a press conference at the end of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat held recently in Phnom Penh, H.E. Prak Sokhonn said during the upcoming visit, he planned to meet parties concerned and distribute humanitarian aid to a local hospital in Yangon. He is also scheduled to meet with all the ASEAN ambassadors to Myanmar who are monitoring the situation there.
