On the Cosmonaut’s Day, H.E. Anatoly Borovik, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Cambodia, visited the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) and took part in the opening ceremony of the bust monument to Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, by sculptor Alexey Leonov, which was presented as a gift to Phnom Penh from the Dialogue of Cultures – United World” Foundation.
According to the embassy’s press release, at the bust monument opening ceremony, H.E. Anatoly Borovik emphasised the significance of the Cosmonaut’s Day that unites countries and all humanity together on the path to progress.
“On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first to see something that mankind had never seen before – our planet from the outside” the head of the Russian Embassy marked.
In this context, H.E. Ambassador also emphasised the Russia’s commitment to broad international cooperation in the peaceful exploration of outer space, as well as expressed his confidence that new generations of researchers will become worthy successors of the traditions of their predecessors.
The Russian ambassador noted the leading contribution of the ITC, which was built with the assistance of the USSR and opened in 1964 (formerly called the Superior Technical Institute of Khmer–Soviet Friendship) to the training of technical specialists for the Kingdom, as well as the large-scale assistance of his country in the restoration of Cambodia after the liberation from the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime in 1979.
H.E. Anatoly Borovik marked the important role of the Kingdom as the ASEAN Country-Coordinator for Russia-ASEAN Dialogue Partnership and the Chair in ASEAN in 2022 in enhancing the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation between Russia and Cambodia.
On the same day, H.E. Anatoly Borovik had a meeting with H.E. Dr. Om Romny, Director of the ITC.
During the conversation, they discussed the current state and prospects of the development of scientific relations between the relevant institutions of the two countries, including within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between MIREA-Russian Technological University and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
