Cabinet of Ministers has recently decided for January 14, 2018 as the timing for the election of senate members and discussed some revisions of the Law on Election of the Senate.

Chaired by Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, the body made the decisions related to the fourth mandate senate arrangement during its last week's regular meeting at Peace Palace here in Phnom Penh.

Subject to further discussion and adoption by the next meeting of the National Assembly, some proposed key revisions of the Law on Election of the Senate include the increased number of senate members from 61 to 62 and the shortening of election campaign from 21 to 14 days.

The Cabinet of Ministers made the discussion as the announcement of official result for June 4 Commune/Sangkat Council Election is nearing, on June 25.

Only elected commune and Sangkat councillors and eligible members of the National Assembly can vote to select members of Senate.

Qualified from 2012 to 2018, the third mandate senate consists of 61 members two were nominated by the King, the other two by the National Assembly, and the rest were those who won the voting.
