Cambodia Establishes a Consulate in Lao Province of Champasak

Cambodia has established a consulate in Champasak province of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and the official inauguration ceremony will take place on July 1, 2016, said a press release of the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on the outcome of the visit of Senior Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn in Lao PDR, on June 16-17.

At the same time, Lao PDR has also created a consulate in the Cambodian province of Stung Treng and the official opening ceremony is scheduled to be held on June 30, 2016, it added.

Regarding the official visit of H.E. Prak Sokhonn, also Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to Lao PDR, it was made at the invitation of his Lao counterpart, H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith, to further boost the ties of friendship and cooperation between both neighboring nations.

According to the press release, during his stay in Lao PDR, on June 17 H.E. Prak Sokhonn held a bilateral talk with H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith, and the two sides spoke highly of the bilateral relations and cooperation which have been developed unceasingly through the exchange of visits, both at national and local levels.

Both sides agreed to continue carrying out their existing bilateral resolutions and agreements; to enhance the cooperation in maintaining peace and security along the common border, combating drug trafficking; to speed up the border marker planting work and the construction of road and bridge linking the two countries; to foster the trade exchange and investment; to increase bachelor’s degree scholarships to 15 a year; and to closely cooperate and mutually support at regional and international forums.

On the same day, in the afternoon, H.E. Prak Sokhonn paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister of Laos H.E. Thongloun Sisoulith, and in the evening, he attended the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Cambodia and Laos, organised by the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Lao PDR.

After Lao PDR, the Cambodian top diplomat continued his trip to Thailand for an introductory visit on June 19-20, at the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand H.E. Don Pramudwinai; and to Viet Nam for a visit from June 21 to 23, at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam H.E. Pham Binh Minh.
