Cambodia Highlights Attention to Women and Children at 140th IPU Assembly Meeting

Cambodian National Assembly (NA) delegation led by H.E. Mrs. Ban Sreymom, Deputy Chairwoman of the NA Commission on Education, Youth, Sports, Cults, Religious Affairs, Culture and Tourism, shared Cambodia’s national social protection policies on maternal and child health to the recent 140th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly Meeting in Doha, Qatar.

According to H.E. Mrs. Ban Sreymom, this Workshop on child, newborn and maternal health was held to boost health financing for women and children and to urge the legislative bodies of the member countries to support health improvement for women and children and to partner with Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) on the issues.

In the meeting, H.E. Mrs. Ban Sreymom emphasised that the Royal Government of Cambodia had approved national social protection policies on maternal and child health and issued budget package support for women during the fetal period. The packages include free medical checkups and medical services during pregnancy, childbirth, and post-natal periods.

Country participants also shared their individual experiences and discussed many issues such as legal protection for women who suffered domestic violence, young-age marriage issues, child rights issues, and overall health support issues at both national and global levels.
