Cambodia Holds Workshop to Boost Local Rice Consumption

A workshop to promote the local rice prices and markets was organised here recently by BarterCam Co., Ltd. with the participation of rice millers, rice seed experts and representatives of Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF).

The purpose of the event is to discuss ways to enhance the prices and markets of Cambodian rice in the country and to increase consumers’ trust on the quality of Cambodian rice.

Mr. Poeuv Bunrith, CRF Global Market Access Coordinator, said Cambodian rice is recognised by the international community by its high quality and taste. But, only foreign consumers have chance to taste it. As high quality rice production takes time with high cost, the producers and distributors do not generally sell it to local consumers who do not really pay attention to the rice quality and species, but to the prices, he explained.

Cambodia’s rice was awarded the World’s Best Rice for three consecutive years from 2012 to 2014.

Rice is the main food of Cambodians. There are more than ten different rice species, but Malis (Jasmine) is the state’s brand rice and has been already registered at the Department of Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Commerce.
