Cambodia, Laos to Further Boost Tourism Cooperation

Cambodia and Laos have pledged to further boost bilateral cooperation on tourism in order to attract more tourists and foster economic development in the two neighbouring countries.

The commitment was made during a bilateral meeting between Cambodian Minister of Tourism H.E. Thon Khon, and H.E. Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, on the sidelines of 2020 ASEAN Tourism Forum held recently in Brunei.

The meeting focused mainly on self-driving tour cooperation, direct flight from Laos to Cambodia’s coastal areas, sharing of experience and joint development of tourism community and eco-tourism under the Triangle Development Area framework.

It also looks into the cooperation under sub-regional frameworks such as Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), Mekong-Lancang, Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), CLMV and CLV cooperation.

Both sides were positive that a Memorandum of Understanding on tourism cooperation mentioned will be inked shortly.

In 2019, Cambodia welcomed 6.7 million of foreign tourists, up 8 percent compared to 2018.

For the first ten months of 2019, some 264,000 Lao tourists visited Cambodia, claiming the 4th place of the top ten foreign visitors to the Kingdom.
