Cambodia Sees Rapid Growth in EV Adoption

Cambodia is experiencing a significant surge in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), with a total of 3,676 units of registered electric cars, electric scooters and three-wheeler electric vehicles as of August 2024, up from 2,968 units as of June this year.

Minister of Public Works and Transport H.E. Peng Ponea mentioned the figures in a Dissemination Workshop on National Policy on EV Development 2024-2030 held here on Wednesday.

“The increase in the use of EVs in Cambodia has been accompanied by the development of the EV sector within the framework of the global trend that is growing remarkably fast,” he said.

The three most popular EV brands in Cambodia are China’s BYD, Japan’s Toyota and America’s Tesla, according to the ministry.

The number of EVs is still small compared to the total number of registered vehicles in the country. Currently, there are more than 7 million cars and motorbikes registered, 85 percent of which are motorbikes, 10 percent are cars, and the rest are transport vehicles.

U
nder the National Policy on EV Development 2024-2030, the Royal Government of Cambodia aims to increase the number of EVs in its inventory to 30,000 by 2030.
