Cambodia, Singapore Agree to Promote and Deepen Bilateral Relations and Cooperation

Cambodia and Singapore have agreed to continue promoting and deepening the bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries in the sectors of trade, tourism, education, investment, and defence.

The agreement was made during the two-day official visit of Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore to Cambodia H.E. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, which was wrapped up on Feb. 16.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister, and H.E Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan had a bilateral meeting, during which the two Foreign Ministers highly valued the existing excellent bilateral relations between both countries and discussed means and ways to advance the cooperation in multifaceted areas, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s statement made public this evening.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn expressed his appreciation for the medical equipment provided by the Government of Singapore as well as for taking care of Cambodian citizens living and working in Singapore by allowing them to get access to the Covid-19 vaccination, saying the Singaporeans had received the same treatment in Cambodia.

For his part, H.E Vivian Balakrishnan reaffirmed Singapore’s support to Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2022 and extended his warm congratulations and support to H.E Prak Sokhonn for his role as ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy on Myanmar.

The two Foreign Ministers emphasised the importance of the tourism sector and the cooperation in mutual recognised vaccines certificates, noting that there are regular flights in operation between Cambodia and Singapore due to high percentage of vaccinated population in the two countries and the effective control of Covid-19.

Both sides noted with satisfaction the positive and growing two-ways trade despites challenges posed by Covid-19, and agreed to urge the relevant ministries and agencies to double their efforts to further promote the cooperation in this area.

The two ministers also emphasised the importance of strengthening the security and defence cooperation through exchanging visits by high-ranking military and police officials.

On regional and international cooperation, the two sides exchanged views on issues of common interest and concern and expressed full support to each other in multilateral fora, including in the ASEAN framework.

During the visit, H.E. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan also paid a courtesy call on Samdech Akka Moha

Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

He also had separate meetings with H.E Dr. Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance, H.E Say Samal, Minister of Environment, and H.E. Hun Many, Chairman of the Commission on Education, Youth, Sports, Religious Affairs, Culture and Tourism of the National Assembly of Cambodia.
