Cambodia Targets to Have 300,000 Tour Guides by 2025

Inspired by the increasing number of tourists visiting the country, Ministry of Tourism has set a target to have at least 300,000 qualified tour guides in 2025 to work both within the country and the region.

Minister of Tourism H.E. Thong Khon set out the ambition when chairing a recent meeting taking place here in Phnom Penh, adding that an additional of 50,000 guides are needed every year as more and more visitors are coming to Cambodia.

The ministry's figure indicates that Cambodia welcomed 5.2 million tourists last year a five percent increase compared to the year before; and the country is expecting 7 million visitors by 2020.

Minister of Tourism called for further capacity building of his provincial departments, including the management of tour guide services.

According to the World Tourism Organisation, tourism in Cambodia alone generated 2.3 indirect and 1.2 direct jobs across the country.
