Cambodia To Join UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize 2019

Cambodia's Ministry of Environment is preparing to join the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize 2019 and other mechanisms to raise and promote environmental understanding in the country.

This information was made known here yesterday when H.E. Say Samal, Minister of Environment, received H.E. Lim Bunhok, Secretary General of the Cambodian National Commission for UNESCO.

According to the ministry, in the meeting, H.E. Lim Bunhok introduced to H.E. Minister the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize 2019, geo-park creation, and other mechanisms to promote environmental understanding.

For his part, H.E. Say Samal spoke highly of the Cambodian National Commission for UNESCO's contribution to the protection of environment, natural resources and biodiversity and to the sustainable development efforts of Cambodia.

For the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize 2019, he added, the ministry will commission two General Departments, including the General Department of Administration for Natural Conservation and Protection and the General Department of Local Communities, to coordinate and cooperate with the National Commission for UNESCO.

UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize is an award for environmental conservation. Its purpose is to afford recognition to outstanding contributions by individuals, groups of individuals, institutes or organisations in the management or preservation of the environment, consistent with the policies, aims and objectives of UNESCO, and in relation to the Organisation's programmes in this field, i.e. environmental and natural resources research, environmental education and training, creation of environmental awareness through the preparation of environmental information materials and activities aimed at establishing and managing protected areas such as biosphere reserves and natural World Heritage sites.

Applications for the 2019 UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation are open. The Prize is awarded every two years. As of 2019, the financial Prize reward is US$100,000, a donation graciously made by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman.
