Cambodia, UNAIDS to Begin a Plan to Terminate Epidemic of HIV/AIDS

National AIDS Authority and the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) will begin the implementation of a plan to terminate rapidly the epidemic of HIV/AIDS disease in Cambodia.

The update was announced by Mrs. Dr. Vladanka Andreeva, UNAIDS Country Director to Cambodia, during the meeting with H.E. Ieng Mouly, Senior Minister and Chairperson of the National AIDS Authority here in Phnom Penh recently.

The UNAIDS country director continued that the plan titled Fast Track Cities will be implemented in Cambodia’s four capital and provincial cities, namely Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey, to be role models for terminating HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country.

Those four capital and cities will reach an agreement to implement that plan soon, she added.

H.E. Ieng Mouly supported the initiative, stressing that Cambodia has existing support mechanisms to implement the plan with concerned institutions, ministries and partners to prevent the outbreak of the disease.

He also underlined that his authority is preventing the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, and eliminating discrimination of people with the disease successfully using three pillars: leadership and ownership, partnership, and investment.

According to Mrs. Dr. Vladanka Andreeva, Cambodia will host the 39th General Assembly of the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF) on Dec. 3-4 with the participation of 300 representatives from countries around the world.

The meeting will focus mainly on achieving the targets for 2020-2025 and reflecting about the challenges in providing good services and fighting HIV/AIDS.
