Cambodia, Vietnam Vow to Further Nurture Their Friendship

Cambodia and Vietnam were committed to continue to do their best to further foster their bilateral relations and cooperation.

The commitment was underlined during courtesy visits made by H.E. Mrs. Men Sam An, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, to General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong and Vietnamese Prime Minister H.E. Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi, Vietnam on June 24.

H.E. Mrs. Men Sam An, also Minister of the National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection, Vice President of the Cambodian People’s Party, and Chairwoman of the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Association, represented the Royal Government of Cambodia to attend and deliver remarks at the ceremony marking the 55th founding anniversary of the countries’ diplomatic ties held in Hanoi yesterday.

According to Vietnam News Agency (VNA), during the courtesy calls, both sides noted with satisfaction the development of the two countries’ friendly neighbourliness and comprehensive cooperation, especially the maintenance of high-level contact and the effective implementation of cooperation mechanisms. Bilateral trade has been on the rise, with Vietnam the largest ASEAN investors and one of the five biggest foreign direct investors in Cambodia. Partnerships in defence, security, education-training, and locality-to-locality ties, especially between border provinces, have continued to be promoted.

H.E. Mrs. Men Sam An stressed that during the past over five decades, the Cambodian and Vietnamese parties and people have always stood side by side and thanked the great assistance of Vietnam’s Party, State, army, and people for Cambodia in its struggle for national liberation from the Pol Pot genocidal regime as well as its national construction and development cause.

H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong underscored the important meaning of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year, particularly the celebration of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 45th anniversary of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s path to overthrow the Pol Pot genocidal regime.

For his part, Prime Minister H.E. Pham Minh Chinh highly valued the coordination to successfully organise the celebration of the 45th anniversary of Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s path to topple the Pol Pot genocidal regime on June 20. The ceremony, held in the border areas of Binh Phuoc and Thbong Khmum provinces under the chair of the two PMs, and the one marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations on June 24 helped raise Vietnamese and Cambodian people’s awareness and sense of responsibility towards the enhancement of the countries’ good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive, sustainable, and long-term cooperation, he said.

On the same day, H.E. Mrs. Men Sam An also held a working session with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Le Minh Khai, during which the two DPMs shared the view that in the time ahead, it is necessary to jointly step up and successfully organise high-level visits and other important activities in the Vietnam – Cambodia Friendship Year 2022; boost economic connectivity; increase the frequency of direct flights; bring into play the countries’ border gate systems to facilitate bilateral trade and people-to-people exchange; enhance cooperation among localities, particularly border provinces; and keep working closely and supporting each other at international, regional, and sub-regional forums, especially this year – when Cambodia holds the ASEAN Chairmanship.
