As Cambodia is going to host the ASEAN Summit in November this year, the media outlets – print media, electronic media and new media – are playing their important parts in the promotion of ASEAN awareness and its understanding to the public, said H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information.
H.E. Minister made the remarks in a keynote address to the opening ceremony of the ERIA-Khmer Times Media Event on Reporting Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2022, held here on Wednesday.
Speaking to dozens of journalists from various media outlets in Cambodia, H.E. Khieu Kanharith said that Cambodian media has very important roles in contributing to ASEAN’s stability, economic development and ASEAN Community building, especially during the Cambodia’s chairmanship.
Media plays the roles of informing, educating and entertaining, and it is an inevitable partner in realising the ASEAN’s visions and goals, he added.
“Cambodian media outlets which include print media, electronic media and new media are playing their important parts in the promotion of ASEAN awareness and its understanding to the public,” H.E. Khieu Kanharith stressed. “It is also served as medium to get the Cambodian people be connected with ASEAN people, and the people throughout the globe.”
The one-day workshop, co-organised ERIA and Khmer Times, is aimed to increase the overall capacity of local journalists from all media platforms to understand and report on these issues in a comprehensive manner.
Khmer Times Publisher Mr. Mohan Bandam said promoting access to information about ASEAN and for this year, at least until November, are key areas which journalists discuss to have a better understanding on Cambodia and the challenges it is and will be facing in its third round go as chairman of the ten country caucus.
“We need to evaluate the enormity of Cambodia’s position as Chairman and how we report the events which will shape Cambodia’s legacy during the current tenure and have a hand in how the country will look, form eyes of those outside of the country, in the region and beyond,” he emphasised.
Cambodia has taken up the ASEAN chairmanship this year amid new regional and international developments, under the theme ‘ASEAN A.C.T: Addressing Challenges Together’.
Under this theme, Cambodia aims to build a harmonious ASEAN Community that is peaceful, stable, and prosperous.
Identifying political, security, economic, social, , and cultural issues as key priorities, ASEAN Chair wants to strengthen the group’s engagement with wider regional and face up against global challenges.
H.E. Minister Khieu Kanharith encouraged journalists from print media, electronic media and new media in Cambodia and the outside world to do everything they can to issue, publish and broadcast more positive news and information about the Cambodia’s chairmanship 2022 in order to create a sense of supremeness of our leaders in the historic ASEAN position.
