Cambodian Minister of Public Works Calls for China’s Support to Phnom Penh-Preah Sihanouk Expressway

Cambodia’s Senior Minister H.E. Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport has sought for more China’s support to infrastructure development in Cambodia.

According to a news release of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, during a meeting here on Aug. 2 with visiting Chinese Commerce Minister H.E. Gao Hucheng, H.E. Sun Chanthol expressed his appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its ongoing support and contributions to the infrastructure development of Cambodia.

H.E. Sun Chanthol requested H.E. Gao Hucheng to help to accelerate the approval of two pending loans for National Road No. 51 and the rehabilitation of Ring Road No. 2, and to facilitate a concession loan to China Road and Bridge Corporation to invest in the expressway between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville on a Build Operate and Transfer scheme.

At the same time, H.E. Sun Chanthol discussed the need for funding of the rehabilitation of the Northern line from Phnom Penh to Poipet and to upgrade the load axle to 20 tons like the southern line. In addition, he expressed the royal government’s desire to build new railway lines connecting Poipet to Siem Reap and Siem Reap to Phnom Penh.

In reply, H.E. Gao Hucheng agreed that infrastructure development plays a very important role in boosting the economic growth of Cambodia and pledged to set up working teams to follow up these projects. He also expressed his strong support and commitment to assist in moving forward with all the requests and to conduct studies on the existing roads and railways, and the new railway mentioned by H.E. Senior Minister.
