Cambodian PM: Media Plays More Active Role amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Media sector plays more significant role for the public interest while Cambodia as well as the world are facing the COVID-19 pandemic, underlined Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia in his recent message to mark the 28th World Press Freedom Day (May 3).
“Media connects the government with the people. It serve as an effective means to bring information from the government to the people as well as to bring back information and needs from the people to the government,” said Samdech Techo Hun Sen. “Media is an indispensable partner of the government.”
Despite the difficult and challenging circumstances caused by COVID-19, journalists have worked hard to get the news out to the public as quickly as possible and have joined the Royal Government in the fight against this pandemic, especially against fake news at all stages effectively and successfully, he continued.
“Taking this opportunity, I would like to sincerely commend and appreciate all the media institutions and journalists who have worked hard to contribute to society,” he added.
At the same time, the Premier called on all journalists to contribute more actively in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. “In this difficult and dangerous situation, I urge all journalists to continue their efforts to provide accurate information to the people, especially to spread educative messages and preventive measures of the Ministry of Health, the ‘3 Dos, 3 Don’ts’ as well as the Royal Government’s lockdown measure to protect the lives of people and cut off the transmission chain of COVID-19 into the community so as to end the Feb. 20 Community event in the near future,” he said.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen also emphasised that the Royal Government’s efforts alone cannot be successful without the participation of media institutions and people.
Besides, Samdech Techo Prime Minister appealed to the journalists to continue building their capacities, sticking to their professional ethics, and combating fake news.
This year’s commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day was held under the theme “Information as a public good”.
