Cambodian Top Diplomat Reaffirms Cambodia’s Commitment to Host 13th ASEM Summit

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn shared here this morning the nation’s commitment to host the 13th ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) in 2020.

The commitment was emphasised at the celebration of ASEM Day under the theme “Cambodia towards the 13th ASEM Summit 2020 and Cambodian Foreign Policy in the Current Global Context”.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn said Cambodia has been involved with ASEM since 2004 at the 5th ASEM Summit in Viet Nam, considering it as a key forum for cooperation between region and region.

ASEM is a positive mechanism to promote Cambodia on the international arena and the Kingdom has benefitted a lot from this forum in terms of economy, development, human capacity building, trade, tourism, people-to-people exchange, etc., he underlined.

Since then, Cambodia has been actively participated in ASEM’s different activities and hosted two events, including the 7th Face-to-Face Training under Asia-Europe Public Diplomacy Training Initiative and the 8th ASEM Sustainable Development Dialogue, he pointed out.

The hosting of the 13th ASEM Summit in 2020 will be the biggest event in the history of Cambodia in the modern time, H.E. Prak Sokhonn stressed.

“We used to successfully host many regional and sub-regional meetings such as the ASEAN Summits in 2002 and 2012, but they were not as big as this ASEM Summit. As one Royal Government, one nation, we will do our best to ensure the smooth and successful process of this meeting,” said the Cambodian top diplomat, adding that it is a very good opportunity to reflect Cambodia’s role on the international arena and to further expand dialogue partners to boost more cooperation and friendship.
