Cambodia’s Kampot Pepper and Kompong Speu Palm Sugar Receive GI Awards in Thailand

Two main Cambodia’s products – Kampot pepper and Kampong Speu palm sugar – have recently obtained another geographical indication (GI) in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to the Ministry of Commerce’s news release, those two products’ applications were submitted differently on Mar. 17, 2017 in Thailand and on Dec. 28, 2016 in Vietnam through the regional GI project, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD)/UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The GI awards were handed over to the two Cambodian products in a ceremony organised at the French Embassy in Thailand co-chaired by French Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Gilles Garachon, EU Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Jesus Miguel Sanz, and Thai Minister of Commerce H.E. Apiradi Tantraporn.

Kampot Pepper successfully gained its first GI from the EU on Mar. 18, 2016, and now Kampong Speu Palm Sugar is expected to be the next Cambodian product to gain GI certificate from the EU since the product is now being finally examined.
