Cambodia’s Stance on Branding “Kun Khmer” at SEA Game 2023

Cambodia has reiterated its stance to brand “Kun Khmer” instead of “Muay” at the SEA Games 2023 to be hosted by the country.

H.E. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism and Secretary General of the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) made the affirmation, adding that as the host country, Cambodia has the right to preserve and adhere to the principles of the national identity.

Cambodia braded “Kun Khmer” for the games to promote Khmer traditional martial art which is a part of the country’s national identity, said the secretary general.

To get the sport ready for the SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games 2023, the committee organised Kun Khmer SEA Championship 2022 on Dec. 9-11 at the 9th SEA Festival in Preah Sihanouk province.

Kun Khmer National and International Federation also organised a training for technical officials, arbitrators and judges to sharpen their capacity.

Cambodia has recently announced to officially introduce the term “Kun Khmer” instead of “Muay” for boxing competition at the 32nd SEA Games, and CAMSOC has circulated formal letters to all ASEAN member countries on the change.
