Cambodia Hosts ASEAN Unity for Peace Cultural Festival

The ASEAN Unity for Peace Cultural Festival (ASEAN UP Cultural Festival) was held at Chaktomuk Theatre in Phnom Penh yesterday evening on the occasion of the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.
H.E. Ms. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia said that the cultural event is not only celebrating art and culture but also indicating a way forward in the New Normal that will strengthen our bonds of friendship, cultural harmony, positivity, and joy, allowing us to exchange artistic creativities and learn from each other to enrich our understanding about the similarities and diversity of our ASEAN countries.
This event was held in order to showcase the artistic and cultural diversity that celebrates the philosophy of enhancing collaboration and understanding among ASEAN Member States, she added.
As the host of this official side-event, with immense pleasure and delight, H.E. Ms. Phoeurng Sackona said the opening of this two-day hybrid festival offering inspiring programmes from the ASEAN Member States including performances from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand as well as from India, one of our ASEAN’s friends.
This 2022 is marked the “30th Anniversary of ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations” year, she added.
H.E. Ms. Phoeurng Sackona also profoundly thanked the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia for its support.

Cambodia, the 5th Runner Up of Miss Grand International 2022

Pich Votey Saravody, Miss Grand Cambodia, has been named the 5th runner up of Miss Grand International 2022, at the final round held in Indonesia on Oct. 25.
This is the first time for Cambodia for being among the top ten finalists of Miss Grand International.
“Thank you all for your support. Cambodia can now make it. I’m very happy to be able to bring pride to the nation,” said enthusiastically Pich Votey Saravody after receiving the crown.
Isabella Menin from Brazil was crowned Miss Grand International 2022, while Misses Grand Thailand, Indonesia, Venezuela, and Czech Republic are the four runners up, respectively.
Miss Grand International 2022 is the 10th edition of Miss Grand International pageant. It attracted 68 contestants from different countries and territories.

Annual Kathina Festival to Begin Tomorrow

The Kathina Festival, one of the biggest Buddhist festivals in the Kingdom, will start this year on Oct. 11 across the country and last until Nov. 8.
The term “Kathina”, taken from Pali means pieces of cloth, or Chivara, Buddhist monks’ robes, offered by worshippers to the monks who did not leave their pagodas to collect alms as usual for three months (Chol Vossa or Rainy Retreat).
Every year, fifteen days after the Pchum Ben Festival (Festival for the Dead) succeeds the period of Kathina which lasts almost a month, from the first day of the waning moon of Assoch to the fifteenth day of the full moon of Kattik.
During this period of twenty-nine days, Cambodian people of all social backgrounds jointly contribute their donations, either in materials or cash, for the Buddhist monks to build achievements inside their respective pagodas or communities.
Overall, Kathina, celebrated every year throughout Cambodia, is a festival of solidarity between people from all walks of life.

Kep Troupe Wins First Prize at Lakhon Bassac Festival 2022

Rasmey Vabbathor, a Lakhon Bassac (Bassac Theatre) troupe from Kep province won the first prize in a competition organised during the Lakhon Bassac Festival 2022, which was wrapped up here yesterday evening.
Neay Peng Pos troupe from Kampong Cham province and Ou Sam-ang troupe from Phnom Penh capital are the two runners up.
H.E. Ms. Minh Kosny, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, who presided over the closing ceremony, expressed her congratulations to the winners and encouraged them to continue making efforts to contribute to the promotion of performing arts to be developed in a sustainable way.
The Lakhon Bassac Festival 2022 took place on Oct. 3-4 at the Department of Visual Arts in Phnom Penh under the theme “The Culture of Peace”.
Originated from Lakhon Treung Khlok in Bassac district, Klaing province, Kampuchea Krom, Lakhon Bassac is a spoken and sung theatre that has been extremely popular in Cambodia in the old days. It is often performed in various festivals in pagodas and villages.
