Consultation on Prevention against Child Sexual Exploitation in Tourism

Minister of Justice H.E. Ang Vong Vathana chaired a consultative workshop on Report of Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism here in Phnom Penh early this week.

Addressing on the occasion, the minister pointed out that some coming to Cambodia under the tourist title, but their real intention is for child sex or even trafficking.

Due to the modernisation of and easier access to information technology, such abuse of children is happening globally.

Considering child sexual exploitation and trafficking as a criminal threat both for the children themselves, their family as well as Cambodia, H.E. Ang Vong Vathana urged for a joint effort with all concerned stakeholders to address it.

He also underlined joint efforts of ASEAN member countries including Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam in establishing coordination mechanism to better protect child sexual exploitation.

In addition to this, Mrs. Noroko Shibata, Representative of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), stressed that formulation of legal safeguard for keeping children safe from sexual exploitation in tourism is necessary, not only for Cambodia, but also for other nations in the region.
