Donor Community Committed to Support Cambodia’s Mine Clearance Strategic Plan

Japan, the People’s Republic of China, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the U.S., and other partners have been committed to support Cambodia’s strategic plan for a mine-free nation by 2025.
The commitment was underscored by H.E. Heng Ratana, Director General of the Cambodian Mine Action
Centre (CMAC), in a meeting at the CMAC’s headquarters here this morning with Mr. Juan Carlos Ruan, Director of the Implementation Support Unit of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (ISU-APMBC).
Mr. Juan Carlos Ruan appreciated the Royal Government of Cambodia for its efforts in carrying out the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Ant-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (Ottawa Treaty) with highest responsibility.
Mr. Juan Carlos Ruan welcomed Cambodia’s commitment for a mine-free status by 2025 and was convinced that the Kingdom will continue to actively participate in the implementation of the Ottawa Treaty.
Cambodia’s mine clearance operation has so far cleared 2,328 square kilometres of land contaminated by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW).
About 1,118,810 anti-personnel mines, 25,952 anti-tank mines, and 2,983,416 cluster bombs have been found and destroyed through the humanitarian activity.
