Draft National Policy on Khmer Language Approved

The weekly cabinet meeting, held here this morning under the chairmanship of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, discussed and approved the draft National Policy on Khmer Language, said H.E. Phay Siphan, Spokesperson of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

This draft national policy was elaborated with a vision to sustainably enhance the prestige of the Khmer language in order to preserve the Khmer identity, he said, stressing that its main purpose is promote consistency in using the national language in writing, reading and loanword creation, etc. by ensuring the conservation and development of this language.

This draft policy is a reflection of the Royal Government's reform and a roadmap for the National Council of Khmer Language and relevant ministries to fulfill their sacred mission to achieve the vision, objectives and goals, the spokesperson underlined.

Khmer, is one of the approximately 144 languages of the Mon Khmer language in the Austronesian language.
