EU Ambassador, Optimistic about ASEAN-EU Partnership

Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Cambodia H.E. George Edgar has expressed his optimism over the close cooperation and partnership between ASEAN and the EU, while presiding over the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations.

This is an important event, recalling the achievements attained by both communities in their partnership and reflecting their future cooperation plan, said the ambassador of the celebration held at the EU Delegation in Cambodia, Phnom Penh on Thursday.

The EU-ASEAN Youth Photo Competition was among a number of events organised by the EU Mission to ASEAN to mark the 40th Anniversary of EU-ASEAN Relations. This year, more than 700 beautiful photos were submitted by young candidates across ASEAN Member States, capturing and narrating “Unity in Diversity” – the common spirit of the peoples of the EU and ASEAN, said H.E. George Edgar.

Cooperation between the EU and ASEAN is found particularly in the political, economic and social fields. EU is the ASEAN’s largest trading and investment partner. An amount of 170 million Euros was allocated to ASEAN to support three areas – connectivity through trade and economic integration, climate change and disaster management, and global dialogue mechanism – from 2014 to 2020.

According to the EU Delegation in Cambodia, the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are the two most advanced regional integration processes in the world. Both are committed to addressing issues through a multilateral approach, and both see regional integration as the most effective way to foster stability, build prosperity and address global challenges.

The year 2017 is a milestone in many ways – it marks the 40th Anniversary since the establishment of EU-ASEAN Dialogue Relations, 50 years since the establishment of ASEAN, and 60 years since the establishment of the European Economic Community, the predecessor of the EU.
