Extractive Industry Governance Forum Launched

Officials from relevant government bodies, civil society organisations and private groups gathered yesterday here at Sunway Hotel for an official launch of Extractive Industry Governance Forum (EIGF) by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Presided over by Minister of Mines and Energy H.E. Suy Sem, the forum represents a new mechanism to promote views from different stakeholders to maximise the management and use of natural resources in Cambodia.

The effort, according to H.E. Suy Sem, was resulted from the reform taking place at the Ministry of Mines and Energy in the new mandate, 2014-2018.

Through the forum, participating officials will discuss government policies and strategies on mines and energy as well as their effective implementation, and monitoring and accountability systems.

Mr. Richard Stanger, President of the Cambodian Association for Mining and Exploration Companies, viewed that it is important that all stakeholders gather for a shared purpose, and the forum will promote lessons learned and experience sharing among all.

Ms. Natacha Kim, Executive Director of Cambodians for Resource Revenue Transparency, added that the platform will further build institutional capacity and promote national income while at the same time protecting the environment and community’s benefit.
