Factories Employ Some 1.2 Million Workers in Cambodia

Cambodia has in total 11,168 factories legally registered, employing nearly 1.2 million workers across the country, according to Minister of Labour and Vocational Training H.E. Ith Samheng.

H.E. Minister shared the update during a recent gathering on the occasion of Khmer Traditional New Year and the 131st International Labour Day held here under the chairmanship of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

On average, continued H.E. Ith Samheng, the factories spend more than US$1 billion annually on workers' wages, let alone indirect jobs � such as house rental, transportation, foods, and the like � they are making possible for some two million others.

Of the registered, 1,107 are garment and footwear factories hiring more than 740,000 employees � about 80 percent are female.

Export volume of the garment and footwear manufacturers has risen to over US$7.3 billion in 2016. For the first quarter of this year, the volume reached US$1.55 billion, up more than 13 percent compared with the same period last year.

The major markets for Cambodia's garment and footwear products include Europe, the U.S., Canada and Japan.
