Four Political Parties with Candidates Registered for Senate Election

AKP Phnom Penh, National Election Committee (NEC) has officially acknowledged candidacy of four political parties to join in the upcoming election of senate members, according to its recent press release.

The acknowledgement followed the conclusion of the candidacy registration period, from Nov. 28 to Dec. 12, 2017.

The political parties are Cambodian People's Party (CPP) with 116 candidates registered, Cambodian Youth Party (CYP) with 38, Khmer National Unity Party with 102, and National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful, and Cooperative Cambodia (FUNCINPEC) Party with 116.

As scheduled, the fourth-mandate senate election will take place on Feb. 25, 2018; and it is expected to cost about US$2 million.

Only elected commune and Sangkat councillors and eligible members of the National Assembly can vote to select members of Senate.

Qualified from 2012 to 2018, the third mandate senate consists of 61 members � two were nominated by the King, the other two by the National Assembly, and the rest were those who won the voting.
