FRIM, PNM Celebrates International Day of Forests together

Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and the National Library of Malaysia (PNM) had successfully co-organised the International Day of Forests (IDF) celebration, held at the FRIM campus in Kepong on 19 March.

The celebration was jointly officiated by the FRIM Director General (DG) Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod and PNM DG Nafisah Ahmad.

Commenting on the IDF celebration’s theme this year Celebrating Forests and Water, Abd Latif said the source of clean water comes from forests that act as water catchment areas and therefore, the conservation of forests is important for the health, welfare and sustainability of all life.

A total of 280 participants from the public, ‘Friends of FRIM’ and students celebrated the IDF at FRIM this year. Various interesting activities organised, such as guided tours to nature trails, colouring contest, ‘Museum Hunt’, ‘Love Our Forests Talk’, ‘Reading in the Park’, storytelling and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ drama performance by students from University of Selangor (UNISEL).

Also present were FRIM Deputy DG (Operations) Dr Rahim Sudin, FRIM Technical Services Division Director Dr Khali Aziz Hamzah; FRIM Forestry and Environment Division Director Dr Samsudin Musa; PNM Subsidiary and Community Library Director Abd Rahman Sudin; and PNM Strategic Planning and International Division Deputy Director Chin Loy Jyoon.

The IDF celebration on 21 March was established by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on 21 December 2012, with the aim to appreciate the contribution of forests to people. It was celebrated since 2013.

FRIM celebrates the IDF annually to increase public awareness on issues related to the forest conservation and sharing of information on the FRIM’s role as a forest research institute that conducts research and development (R and D) in order to contribute to the sustainability of the national forest heritage.
