Government To Promote Pepper Trade

Royal Government of Cambodia is drawing up strategic plan to promote both the quality and sustainable markets for Cambodia’s pepper.

The update was shared by H.E. Mao Thora, Secretary of State of Ministry of Commerce when presiding over a seminar on exchanging experience in pepper trading in Cambodia here in Phnom Penh late last week.

To develop Cambodia’s pepper production and to build a confidence in exports, the Ministry of Commerce will encourage Cambodian farmers and pepper associations to ensure ethical and professional standard in running their business.

The ministry along with concerned ministries, institutions as well as national and international organisations, he added, has been greasing support process and mechanisms to bring the quality of the product to the next level, corresponding to the market demands.

Also, a Cambodian pepper federation will be established as government’s counterpart to deal with emerging issues of market, export, trade and beyond.

Pepper is planted in 19 provinces across Cambodia on a total of 6,678 hectares, wherein over 20,000 tons of the product have been harvested every year.

Last year, Cambodia produced 11,819 tons of pepper from 6,124 hectares of the plantation.
