Heng Saody Named New Cambodian Chess Champion

Mr. Heng Saody from Kandal province won the title of "Sdech Ok" (King of Chess) after beating Mr. Bin Keaseng from Kratie province in the final round of the 2017 Cambodia Chess Competition taking place on April 16 in Siem Reap province, home to the famous Angkor temples.

The event, televised live by Bayon TV, was presided over by H.E. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism and President of National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC); H.E. Hun Many, President of Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC); H.E. Say Samal, Minister of Environment; and H.E. Khim Bunsong, Governor of Siem Reap province.

Mr. Heng Saody, 24, got a cash prize of 12 million Riel (some 4,000 Riel equal to US$1) while the two runners up, Mr. Bin Keaseng and Mr. Chhoy Vira, obtained 8 million Riel and 4 million Riel, respectively. Mr. Chheav Bora, who was "Sdech Ok" for two consecutive years (2014-2015), won the 4th place with 3 million Riel.

In addition, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and his spouse awarded the champion with 20 million Riel, the 2nd winner with 12 million Riel, the 3rd winner with 8 million Riel, the 4th winner with 4 million Riel, and the 5th-8th winners with 2 million Riel each.

The 2017 Cambodia Chess Competition was jointly organised by NOCC and UYFC during the 2017 Angkor Sangkranta held from Apr. 14 to 16 in Siem Reap province to celebrate the Khmer Traditional New Year.
