Indian Supports IT Centre for Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University

Preah Sihnaouk Raja Buddhist University (SBU), Phnom Penh held an opening ceremony for an IT Centre which has been established at the university as a Quick Impact Project under the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation with a grant funding from the Government of India.
The centre was inaugurated by H.E. Pen Vibol, Secretary of State, Ministry of Cults and Religious Affairs, and H.E. Dr. Devyani Khobragade, Ambassador of India to Cambodia.
Dr. Ven. Yon Seng Yeat, Acting Rector of SBU, said the IT Centre at SBU will be beneficial for young Buddhist monks, students and staff as computer literacy is very important for the students for learning and research.
H.E. Dr. Devyani Khobragade highlighted that SBU and Embassy of India are closest partners in the field of education and research and taking forth our common goals of spreading the ideals of Buddhism which is one of the strongest bonds between India and Cambodia.
SBU thus played a very important role in promoting India-Cambodia relations in modern contemporary times, she added.
According to the ambassador, India and Cambodia have been maintaining close civilisational and cultural links from ancient times. The relationship has stood the test of time with India always standing with Cambodia through its political and development journey.
She continued that the ideals of Buddhism- especially the ideal of taking a middle path- that informs and guides the Government of India in its contemporary political relations with Cambodia and regionally and globally as well.
H.E. Ms. Ambassador also elaborated that the Government of India is contributing towards socio-economic development of the people of Cambodia through such Quick Impact Projects (QIP) under Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Framework, where in grant assistance is being provided for implementation of 10 projects every year with a capital cost of US$50,000/- for each project. The type of projects under QIP scheme include creation or up-gradation of physical infrastructure such as local community centres, schools, water resources, toilets, socio-economic projects in fields such as education, health, sanitation, child welfare, rural development, gender equality, women empowerment, IT, agriculture, and environment. The emphasis is on short gestation projects with direct benefit to the local communities.
