Intensive Rice Purchase Directly from Producers in the Northwest Committed

Cambodian rice bank is mobilising community centres to purchase rice directly from farmers in the northwestern Cambodia with good market price, according to local media report.

A quoted in the report, the Chief Executive Officer of the bank Oknha Phou Puy underscored that his group planned a daily amount of about US$1,000,000 for the purchase.

Utilising the loans from the Rural Development Bank, the rice bank can establish one or two community rice purchase centre per village in locations of three provinces: Battambang, Pursat and Banteay Meanchey.

The claimed effort followed the commitment of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to buy one million tons of rice from Cambodia from 2017 to 2022 formalised recently.

With the move and other opportunities, the Royal Government of Cambodia is optimistic that Cambodian rice export to international markets will increase and livelihood of rice producers will accordingly be improved.

In the first semester of 2017, Cambodia exported a total of 288,562 tons of milled rice to 56 countries and region, up 7.6 percent compared to the same period a year earlier, according to official figures.
