The Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT), through the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), has launched a digital recycling application called i-Kitar in an effort to make recycling more convenient.

Its deputy minister, Akmal Nasarullah Mohd Nasir said the application was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) to encourage recycling practices among the community.

He said a People’s Housing Project (PPR) housing scheme here has been selected for the implementation of the application, and it will be expanded to other PPRs after evaluating its effectiveness and efficiency.

“So, one of the advantages of the i-Kitar application is that it allows users to make money from recycling,” he said after the i-Kitar launch ceremony at PPR Hiliran here today.

In the meantime, Akmal Nasarullah said that a total of 109,701.35 kilogrammes of goods with a value of RM32,910.40 had been recycled through the Zero Waste Community (KOSIS) programme in 17 PPRs nationwide as of August.

He said the programme involved 55,344 residents from 13,586 units in the 17 PPRs including PPR Lembah Subang 2 in Selangor; PPR Hiliran, Kuala Terengganu; PPR Gua Musang, Kelantan and PPR Tehel in Melaka.

“The KOSIS programme not only assists in resolving the issue of waste disposal in PPRs, but it also helps residents generate side income.

“For example, PPR Hiliran residents managed to generate RM37,253.20 between 2020 and August of this year by recycling food waste and items such as cooking oil,” he said.
