A Laotian man was arrested for allegedly attempting to deal methamphetamines in Kham Kert village, Chheb district, on Saturday and sent to Preah Vihear Provincial Court today.

“The suspect illegally crossed the border into Cambodia with the drug,” said Meak Som Oun, chief of the provincial anti-drug office. “He will [likely] be charged for this crime”.

The suspect, Phit Sasboun Simmavat, called Be, 36, is from Lao’s Champasak province, but was arrested in Preah Vihear province, shortly after he crossed the border.

He was found to be in possession of 1,994 grams of methamphetamine.

Police believe he intended to sell the methamphetamines to an affiliated gang.

Som Oun said the suspect had yet to mention anything about his connection to the gang, but that authorities will continue to investigate the case.

In the first four months of 2015, Preah Vihear provincial police have intervened in 18 methamphetamine-related drug incidents and sent 23 suspects to the provincial court.

This is the fourth arrest for cross-border trafficking of the drug this year.
