Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Announces New Salary Scheme for Civil Servants by 2024

PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today that a new salary scheme for civil servants in Malaysia will be unveiled before the end of 2024. This significant development was shared during the 2023 Public Sector Innovasi Perdana Awards ceremony hosted by the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, who also holds the position of Finance Minister, the government will prepare several guidelines by the end of this year or the first quarter of 2024 to facilitate the announcement of the new salary scheme. He pointed out that the policy usually mandates a salary adjustment study every ten years, but it has now been 12 years since the last one. “There hasn’t been a comprehensive study done before this, but now I have announced the Public Service Renumeration Scheme Study,” he said at the event, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, Public Services Department (JPA) director-general Datuk Seri Dr Zulkapli Mohamed, and Mampu director-general Datuk Rodzi Md Saad.

In addition, Anwar mentioned that as part of the Budget 2024 announcement, the government will provide an initial one-off incentive of RM2,000 to civil servants Grade 56 and below, as well as an RM1,000 incentive to all government retirees, including pensioned and non-pensioned veterans. This is due to the time required to complete the salary study, with the payments scheduled for the end of February 2024.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that the Unity Government is committed to implementing clear policies aimed at elevating the country’s economy and enhancing the prosperity of its people, as part of efforts to improve and strengthen Malaysia’s current economic status.
