Minister of Commerce Encourages Domestic Silk Production and Exports

H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, has called for participation from local farmers to sustain silk weaving sector, considered as high potential product for national culture and economy.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, the minister made the appeal during his visit to Golden Silk Pheach Preservation Centre in Banteay Srey district of Siem Reap province, to follow up the progress of accelerating inclusive markets for smallholders (AIMS) project, on July 25.

Enhancement of living standard of local farmers and reduction of poverty were the main objectives of the AMIS project, H.E. Pan Sorasak highlighted.

He continued that luxurious silk, one of the ten priority products of the project, would contribute to maintaining national identity and increasing income among women entrepreneurs living in rural areas.

H.E. Pan Sorasak affirmed the ministry’s efforts in promoting domestic raw silk production and luxurious silk products for diversified export destination, and in reducing of raw silk import.

Cambodia National Silk Strategy 2016-2020 was established by Ministry of Commerce, focusing on conservation of silk weaving, capacity building to entrepreneurs of the industry, and modernisation of silk production toward sustainability.
